Feel that these pictures are very much relevant to the the movie's theme and its exploration of modernity meeting religion.

Find the film particularly disturbing as it questions themes like incest, obsessive belief in religion. Imamura as a key figure in the Japanese New Wave, we see his willingness to explore these previously untouched themes like socially outcasted protagonists, uninhibited sexuality, women in society and their changing roles and critique of social structures.

Having worked with Ozu and developed an antipathy for his style, he does not like too perfect a cinema and Profound precisely subverts this polished feel in Ozu's films.
